Cabarete World Cup 2008

The fourth stop of the PKRA World Tour is happening at Bozo Beach in Cabarete, Dominican Republic for the Cabarete World Cup 2008. This small, unhurried and relaxed tropical town located on the northern end of the Dominican Republic is regarded a great favor as a destination not only for travelers seeking fun and adventure but also for extreme water sports enthusiasts - kitesurfers, windsurfers and scuba divers. The strong trade winds provide consistent fuel for kitesurfing and windsurfing, averaging between 15 and 25 knots onshore with the best wind conditions being in the months of June to August.

The Cabarete leg has always been a thrilling and exciting event from start to finish and has never failed to showcase a different level of kitesurfing each year. The onset of consistent wind enables PKRA riders to perform and land powered tricks and technical moves raising the bar for kitesurfing, redefining the fastest growing water-sport in the world every time the games move to this magnificent spot.

The Cabarete World Cup 2008 will showcase two disciplines, featuring the World Cup Freestyle and Big Air / Board-off Competition. Exciting as it is, Cabarete is also notable and unique among the PKRA tour stops as it is the only leg where no single competitor in the men’s Freestyle event has ever claimed the championship more than once. Last year’s title was claimed by Cabarete’s favorite boy, Ariel Corniel (EH Kiteboarding) who dominated much of the event with a display of new school kiteboarding tricks. In complete contrast, the women’s title is held only by four riders from 2001 to 2007 with Bruna Kajiya (Best, Brazil) being last year’s champion.

In the board-off competition, riders jump as high as they can to give them enough time to take the board off their feet and perform some really nice tricks before putting the board back on as they come down to the water.

The riders to watch out for include Alvaro Onieva (Spain), Aaron Hadlow (UK), Ariel Corniel (Dominican Republic) and Kevin Langeree (Netherlands) for the men and Susi Mai (Germany), Bruna Kajiya (Brazil), Gisela Pulido (Spain) and Jalou Langeree (Netherlands) for the women.

The Dominican Republic Tour stop is being organized by Cabarete Events under the able leadership of its president, Lorenzo Sancassani and Event Coordinator Niurka Rodriguez and is sponsored by the government of Dominican Republic, and Millennium Resort and Spa as the Title Sponsors. as well as EH Kiteboarding, Europcar, Viva Resorts, Velero, Carib Wind Center, Grupo Consolidado, Lax, La Campagna, Ocean Dream Resort, L’Agence Real Estate, Stonefish, and Villa Taina.
