PKRA 2008 - Chile Day 4

A Day of Sporting Fun at the Mall

It was a particularly quiet day at the event site here in Matanzas, Chile as the weather forecast was not good for the day. There was practically no wind in the morning and fog blanketed the competition area. Overcast sky dominated the first half of the day but the cloud cover diminished briefly in the afternoon with the temperature peaking at 18 degrees Celsius.

With practically nothing much left to do for today, about 35 people from the event, athletes, crew and staff of the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) went to the city of Santiago for the day to visit one of the two malls or both. The party left Matanzas at 10:00 am for the two-and-a-half to three-hour drive and the plan was for everyone to meet at the Mall Sport which is a big mall dedicated to everything having to do with sports – running, cycling, surfing, climbing, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, bmx, and practically every sport that can fit in a mall.

The party was able to participate in several activities which made the shopping experience more enjoyable. There is also a standing wave machine inside the mall where people can surf on a pretty good size wave which is manufactured by FlowRider. Those who took part in the surfing and had a chance to try the FlowRider Sports wave machine were Kevin Langeree, Tom Court, Petr Tyuskevich, Maciek Kozerski, Drew Beavis, Sky Solbach, Jeremie Eloy, Andy Yates, Etienne Lhote, Sebastian Garat and Judges Antoine Jaubert & David Tyburski.

Another great attraction within the mall is a climbing wall that can challenge even the most experienced climbers. The Mall Sport also features an ice skating rink, skate park, an air trail, and a bmx park.

Tomorrow is the official awards ceremony on the beach for the Freestyle event which starts at 1:00 pm. It has been a challenging year and an exciting season-ender for five-time world champion Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK) who had to come from 4th to take the world championship crown for the fifth time in a row and also winning the last freestyle event.
